Description

In 1950 one of my all time favorite movies came out... "Harvey" was it's name. It was a delightful tale of Elwood P. Dowd who was thought to me insane simply because he was happy, cheerful, and found great happiness helping others. Of course the fact that his best friend was a giant, 6 foot, invisible, talking, white Pooka Rabbit named Harvey, didn't help that assertion much. While there is a charm to the movie to this day, as an adult now I do see the dark side to the story. Anyway, about 26 or so years ago, this drawing came up at a respected auction house. I did some research and found that the great actor James Stewart (who played Dowd) would, upon request, give autographs with a caricature of "Harvey" drawn with his signature. I felt... who better to draw Harvey than the one person who knows what he looks like! This amazing drawing is done with a black marker on a blue index card (that Stewart usually carried with him just in case!). I debated whether to display this art here. It's not a superman, a "Big-Chested Girl", or barbarian... but it IS a timeless fantasy character, so I believe it belongs.

Thanks for thinking so, and thanks for the comment! It opened your gallery up for me! One of my all time favorites is MOKF, and I regret not yet having a Shang-Chi piece. For now I'll just look at yours!

This is absolutely priceless! Stewart is my favorite actor (although I prefer his Hitchcock films.) What a gem. Congrats and thanks for posting.

Nice to see on CAF - Hopefully I can get my kids to watch this classic film someday - or see the play. Dr. Sanderson: Think carefully, Dowd. Didn't you know somebody, sometime, someplace by the name of Harvey? Didn't you ever know anybody by that name? Elwood P. Dowd (Jimmy Stewart): No, no, not one, Doctor. Maybe that's why I always had such hopes for it.
