Description

Skeezix stands for the first time in this Gasoline Alley Original for December 15, 1921. He was just shy of being 9 months old on that date, since he was only a few days old when left on Walt Wallet's doorstep on February 14, 1921.

As Skeezix grew and became more active, Frank King started to show little sub-plots wherein the reader could follow Skeezix's doings, usually in the foreground of the strip, which were completely independent from the main narrative being carried out by Walt and others in the main portions of the panels. This double narrative technique is beginning to show in this strip, where Skeezix first falls and then reaches for the chair in an attempt to stand again, all without Walt or Rachel even noticing as they discuss whether a child should be allowed to stand at an early age.

King also drew several strips in the early to mid 1920s in which Skeezix's actions mimic those of Uncle Walt. The beginnings of this can be seen in the last panel here, where both Walt and Skeezix end up in parallel poses facing...well...part of Rachel. Even Skeezix's little right hand is poised much the same as Walt's own -- he doesn't seem to yet have quite enough wrist to bend it fully backward. Few comic strip artists other than King would ever concern themselves with such subtitles, but, for me at least, they add greatly to the enjoyment of his strips.
