I recently picked up this 1935 Smitty daily at auction. I almost passed on the piece, until I realized that the gag dealt with a cartoonist. My decision to go for the strip was pretty last minute, but after I won the piece I took a closer look at the small and lousy scan, and started to wonder if the cartoonist pictured was George Herriman. Berndt knew Herriman from his days as working as an office boy in the offices of the New York Journal in the 1910s, and the dark hat and vest certainly fit with Herriman's noted attire. The gag is quite good, but the cherry on top would be if the cartoonist was indeed Herriman. What do you think? The strip is dated February 25, 1935. Additional images below.

Put me in the tentative pro-Herriman camp. In the mean time, was Smitty ever collected? Is it on microfilm? What did the rest of that week look like? More cartoonist gags, perhaps?

Definitely a resemblance in panel 2. But if Herriman, why an elephant?

It is well known that cartoonists, when being asked for a piece of original artwork, often picked out a particularly interesting piece. Why not?

I'll fig out some of my heriiman photos but it looks like him a lot=Glen smitty was collected in cupples leon books and in dell comics -at least the daily stories the reprints are fun and usually quite cheap!
