Description

I am thrilled to present a new ONE MINUTE LATER by the great Leonard Starr -- who better to do a romance cover for Valentine's Day than Leonard. And great inks by Joe Rubinstein over blue-line of Leonard's pencils.

In case anyone doesn't know Mr. Starr, he was born in 1925 ad began working in comics at 17 in 1942-43 for the Harry "A" Chesler and the Funnies, Inc. studios, eventually inking Bob Oksner's pencils. He graduated to drawing for early Timely/Marvel Comics titles, including the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner. Throughout the 1940s, Mr. Starr worked for numerous publishers of comic books and pulps and with Joe Simon and Jack Kirby on their earlier romance comics titles, in particular the Crestwood/Prize title Young Romance. In the late 1940s, he drew for EC Comics, including War Against Crime, before working both as an advertising artist and producing a large amount of work for both the American Comics Group and DC Comics titles during the early to mid-1950s.

For DC, he did covers and worked on titles including Doctor 13, House of Mystery, Gang Busters, Pow-Wow Smith, Indian Lawman and Star-Spangled War Stories, mainly prior to 1957.

In 1957, Starr created the comic strip On Stage, later titled Mary Perkins, On Stage for the Chicago-Tribune-New York News Syndicate which was a mixture of soap opera, adventure and humor. He worked on Mary Perkins until 1979 whereupon , he returned to comic books during the 1970s and 1980s, working on "Morbius, the Living Vampire" for Marvel in 1975 and providing art for DC's Who's Who in the DC Universe (1986) and for a Superman and Lois Lane story in Action Comics.[

In 1979 he revived the comic strip Little Orphan Annie which he continued successfully until his retirement in 2000.

To paraphrase Nicholson's Joker, "Where does he get these wonderful artists?" OML continues to amaze!

A really great addition to your collection, and just in time for Valentine's Day!

Nice! I have always been a big fan of Leonard! Who's next on your list -- Steve Ditko? :)

Congratulations on getting Leonard Starr. I absolutely loved his On Stage strip and he hasn't lost a step since he was chronicling the adventures of Mary Perkins.

Thanks so much Mike; this is (to me) a huge huge coup as Leonard is one of the GREAT ones, for sure.

ALSO,when Alex Raymond suddenly died in a car accident there were only two people being considered to take over Rip Kirby and follow one of the all time great comic strip artists,.Leonard being one of them. When the syndicate realized they may lose Leonard to the competition they quickly green lighted OnStage to not lose him.

Yet another legend -- who probably would never do a commission for anyone else -- delivers a tour-de-force OML piece for the great Michael Finn. Absolutely amazing.

OML isn't too far off when you think about those DC romance comics. One minute, love is dashed on the rocks. The next minute, they live happily ever after.

This is an example of what's called a "humble brag".Mr Starr wrote me :.....knowing that you were as anxious for my reaction as I was to give it which is that I couldn't have hoped for a better looking job. Where were you when I needed you? Oh, how I could have used your help during my 50 to 60 hour weeks!
