Description
Incredible.

That was my thought when I first saw the small thumbnail preview of this Topolino magazine cover.

And then I thought, this is one of Topolino's all-time most beautiful covers.

Imagine how I felt when the chance to add this gem to my collection was given to me.

I still don't fully believe it. But here it is.

The cover refers to the first part of the Moby Dick parody story published on Topolino 3003. Both the cover and inside art are magnificently illustrated by Paolo Mottura.

Uncle Scrooge is Achab, Donald Duck is Ismael, and other Disney characters (Huey Dewey Louie, Fethry, Gyro, the Beagle Boys) perform as characters from the Melville novel.

Back to the cover art, I cannot imagine a better way to illustrate the story! It's dynamic, you can almost feel the wind and the ocean waves dashing on the boat. It features the main characters, including the white whale, and it sort of tells you the story itself.

Just perfect.

Note that the (outstanding) colors on the published one are also Paolo's.

Masterpiece.

Published in different countries (see some examples in the additional images.
Please also check the remake of Mottura's cover illustrated by Giorgio Cavazzano and used in many reprints of the story for Egmont publisher.

Huge thanks, Paolo!!!

yeah... it's a long tradition started in 1949 with "L'Inferno di Topolino" that is still alive and well now :)

It's really impressive work and, I don't know, it may be more than a bit subversive in its presentation and execution. It's certainly not the clean and open art that I have come to expect from Disney.

all this cool art made me look into what disney has going on for comics in English... cause i started wishing i had learned Italian from my grandmother after seeing all this lol!

Happy to see that Disney and IDW were working on a number of really cool publications pretty recently. Which is nice because the classic Disney animated cartoon short stopped being made quite a long time ago.

Wow! Wow! Wow! What a comic masterpiece! The perfect parody of Moby Dick--With Disney characters in all the main roles. There's Uncle Scrooge as Ahab, Donald Duck as Ismael, and other roles played by Huey, Dewey and Louie as well as the Beagle Boys! Genius! But what makes it really sing is the incredible art of Paolo Mottura. Paolo has taken this idea to epic level with his incredible artistry! I am simply blown away by Paolo's gorgeous brushwork! His lines have a beautiful fluidity to them that sweeps and spins and curves its way around the characters and the ship. Even Moby Dick itself, bursts out of the sea with a glorious kind of artistry! The whole effect is simply jaw-dropping! Congratulations on a magnificent pick-up! I am awestruck!
