Description

Fiery Mask
Daring Mystery Comics #1, 5-6 (January 1940-September 1940).
Human Torch Comics #2 (Fall 1940)

When Dr. Jack Castle is called in by police to consult on a sudden spate of zombie attacks, he decides to do some amateur investigating of his own and ends up being captured by the Zombie Master, an enormous, twenty foot tall mad scientist, who has been turning homeless people in living corpses with a special ray of his own design. The insane giant attempts to use his zombifying ray on the good doctor, but discovers that Castle is apparently immune to its effects. Infuriated by this, the Zombie Master continues to increase the power level until the machine powering it overloads. The massive explosion that follows kills the Zombie Master, but Castle escapes, discovering that his exposure to the strange ray has imbued him with fantastic powers, including super strength and the ability to leap vast distances.

With his origin story completed, the newly dubbed "Fiery Mask" went on to tackle a truly bizarre assortment of baddies and their wild schemes, besting the evil scientist Dork (I kid you not) and his flesh eating protoplasm, journeying to Hell to destroy a demonic toddler and exploding an insane Gastroenterologist, mass murderer and blood thief named Dr. Sendach, before his strip faded into history.

Working solo, Joe Simon produced the first and final adventures of the Fiery Mask. Story two came from the hands of George Kapitan and Harry Sahle, while the third adventure had Simon joined by partner Jack Kirby.
