Description

Karate Kid vs. Colossus by Rick Leonardi and Simon Gough

The first superhero comic that I can remember actually buying with my own money was The Uncanny X-Men #231, which featured Colossus and had art by Rick Leonardi. I thought that this big metal guy was just too cool and Colossus became my favorite character. And Rick is the definitive Colossus artist, in my opinion. Nowadays Colossus is still one of my favorite characters, though he seems to be treated even worse than Karate Kid by comics writers. When I first made my list of opponents and artists for my “Karate Kid vs.” commission collection, this one was right at the top, and I am extremely pleased to finally have it. I arranged this commission by donating to the Kickstarter campaign for Watson and Holmes, a really cool comic that Rick drew. And I was surprised and delighted at the commission Rick delivered! Instead of a regular battle, Rick came up with a Karate Kid vs. Colossus in a traditional brick breaking competition. And the humor he injected into the piece is just perfect. Later I sent it over to Simon Gough to add some color and man, does it look fantastic! Colossus is colored perfectly! Huge thanks to Rick and Simon for their brilliant work!

So, if instead of a brick-breaking competition, what if these two actually fought in a hand-to-hand battle? Well, I tell you, Val Armorr’s gonna have a heck of a time. If Peter connects with a good punch or gets Val in a grip, it will be all over. But if Val can use his speed and techniques to avoid Peter’s blows, he might be able to somehow immobilize him by using whatever surroundings they’re fighting in.

If you like this piece, then please do go buy some comics featuring Rick's work in physical and/or digital format.

Love Colossus's face here. And the brick gag is truly funny :)

... really makes me wish Rick was taking regular requests.

[and I hate you for being young enough that 231 would have been your first issue]

Ha! Well I started collecting about three years before that when my mom bought me Transformers #1, but X-Men was my gateway drug to superheroes.
