Description

Concept painting for SLEEPING BEAUTY (1959) by Eyvind Earle. Phillip, armed with the enchanted Sword of Truth and Shield of Virtue, and Maleficent breathing fire and fury in her incarnation as a dragon, meet in their final battle on the drawbridge of Stephen's castle. Signed by Earle. ---

THE ART OF ANIMATION (1958) by Bob Thomas states: "Makers of the dragon sequence in "Sleeping Beauty" needed a sound to illustrate the fiery breath of the monster. What would it sound like? Probably a flame thrower, they decided. They asked the United States Army for some training films on flame throwing and indeed found the sound was precisely what they wanted."
