DescriptionAt the 2005 FallCon, Joel Thingvall suggested that I should get former Animal Man and Coyote artist, Chas Truog to do a commission. Chas had a couple of very nice pieces before him at the table, and so I entered into negotiations with Chas to take on an ambitious sketch commission. Would he do a multiple character commission? Well, maybe. I'm thinking about a group. How big? The Watchmen. Well, maybe two or three of the characters. Chas came up with a price. I asked him if he'd consider doing all six of the main characters for double the price he suggested for three. I also offered to provide a large bristol board (14 1/4 x 21") for drawing on that could accommodate so many characters, since Chas only had smaller sketch tablets with him. Chas was hesitantly amenable, but only if I could get reference for him. Joel helped out by offering to bring his copy of the Watchmen tradeback along to the show on Sunday.Overnight I figured out a possible layout for the Watchmen commission. What if the six characters stood in such a way as to form a "W"? The characters also ought to be arranged in a way that allowed them to be near the characters they were most closely linked in the story. So I figured The Comedian, Ozymandias and Dr. Manhatten in the first "V" of the "W" and Silk Spectre, Nite Owl and on the extreme right (!) Rorshach. The next morning, Joel brought along the reference and Chas and I confirmed what I had in mind. I told him that I was only suggesting the layout, and that he ought to feel free to do what he thought best. Chas seemed to think that my layout made some sense and we went ahead with the sketch commission. It turned out great! Social/Sharing |

Chaz does great stuff. Now he just needs a regular gig again after Animalman and that Leonardo series (out soon in a trade paperback) that he did for DC. Chaz won the Minneapolis Comic Con Alan Hanley Memorial art contest (while a kid in his home state) waaaaay back in the early 80s where he met Mike Baron, who got him a back-up job in Badger, I believe, that Englehart saw, and then got him to draw Coyote when Marhsall Rogers moved onto other endeavors. -- Joel Thingvall, www.wonderthing.com
