I have coveted this piece for years and finally, somehow, it has found its way into my happy hands.

This is for me a wonderful Black Cat piece that strikes a chord from my childhood, so the odds are at some point it was reprinted in the early 60s and I saw it then.

For some reason I have always associated the Black Cat with Judo and this page reinforces this perspective.

In recent years thanks in part to the IDW,Terry and the Pirates books I have come to appreciate the genius of Milton Caniff. So seeing one of his disciples work is always a treat. Among those who give tribute to the influence of Caniff are John Romita and Carmine Infantino. Lee Elias work is definitely influenced by Caniff, but very distinct in and of itself.

From the early days of reading Green Arrow in Adventure and World's Finest I knew his distinct work and loved Lee's Dave Carson stories because of his unique work, so different that the Schwartz stable of artists; Infantino, Kane Anderson, Green but gripping at the turn of the first page.

I should also add that it is a terrific reference source for future Black Cat commissions by a variety of artists.

One final note, for a page produced in 1948, the condition of this art is remarkable, so thanks big time to previous owners for their preservation. I promise to do the same.

An absolutely fantastic page. I can think of no one better to be the steward of this classic image.
