Description

Is there such a thing as a runner-up grail or a grail consolation prize?

As a child of six, before I started "formally" collecting comics a few years later, I had a copy of Amazing Adventures #5, among a handful of then-current books. The stories, and especially the artwork by Adams/Palmer and Colan/Everett made a strong impression on me. The strongest impression of all was page 3 of the Black Widow "And To All A Good Night" story, which featured lusciously rendered Natasha showering and then drying off with a towel. This was one of those pages that imprinted on my youthful DNA, as did, say, the moon landing or the way my grandparent's basement smelled. In retrospect, the page doesn't really advance the story and was likely just included as a tease page to sell comics and profoundly influence malleable children to grow up and marry healthy and potent redheads, which I did as soon as I got the opportunity.

Recently, I came across my collection of Amazing Adventures comics and decided to see if I could find the grail page from #5, and barring that, a nice sample from any of the three Colan/Everett Black Widow stories, which are all lovingly and sensuously illustrated by these two masters. This is the page I was lucky enough to purchase.

Check out the original colors on this page ... it's beautiful in print, too. And, if you can find any Colan/Everett Black Widow pages in your "for sale or trade" column, drop me a line! I still want page three from issue #5, and I'm told that it sold on ebay a few years ago. Hope and ravishing redheads spring eternal!

That's a stunning page. The Black Widow is as sexy as a woman can be, and Gene Colan is a genius.

I am right there with you. In the early 1970s the first women I ever "fell in love wiht" wherer the Black Widow and Gwen Stacy. These impressions will be with me for life.

Same comment for Bill Everett with a big E, and Gene or Genius Colan who is a true master of the realistic stories. You dont' need supe heroes fighting on a page to get an original art jewel !!!

The holy grail is to spend less time making the picture than it takes people to look at it.

If ever Ivan needed eyes in the back of his head! Great page! Love the lack of dialogue, the sign of a great storyteller.

Loved this issue as a kid--and it looks even nicer in b&w original art. Good luck on your quest!

Colan was the right artist for this book and this page is just wonderful! Great Everett inks, too!

I love Gene Colan. And I love the combination of Colan and Bill Everett. The two of them have drawn some of the finest comics I've ever read. I love this page they drew, for the simplicity and clarity of the visual storytelling. The six bottom panels are so evocative that they speak volumes without a single word. This, it seems to me, is the peak of comic book art. I am without words.

"Eyes front, Ivan."

She doesn't ask a lot, doe she?  Another classic Colan page, inked by a legend.

She's not super smart, is she? Eyes front? He has a mirror! Right in front of his eyes.
