Description

Sunpot, chapter 2, page 3: The Nutty Screw

First published in Galaxy magazine, March 1970

Vaughn Bode: “I was given the opportunity of a cartoon feature in Galaxy magazine largely because I won the ’69 Hugo for best fan artist. Unfortunately, paranoia developed very early between me and conservative Galaxy magazine. Sunpot was just too damn avant-garde for a large portion of readers and the dusty editors. Things, like censorship, got so bad it bent my mind until the only way out of the contract was to kill myself or the feature. Alas, I destroyed my creation in the sixth installment and was promptly fired.”

The Sunpot story was drawn and printed in blackline in Galaxy magazine in 1970 (chapters 1 through 4; see additional image). Bodé colored the pages in 1972 for his Cartoon Concert debut at the Detroit Triple Fan Fair. It was then printed in half tone in Dude (all 6 chapters) in 1973. Mark Bodé colored a version that was printed in Heavy Metal when that series started in America in the late 70’s (see additional image). Vaughn’s finished colors, as seen here, never had publication.

Again, another rare Bode treat! Really love the way you've included the original BW page and the 'colorized' page done by Heavy Metal. The different interpretations of coloring are amazing. It's such a shame that Vaughn was unable to publish Sunpot in glorious color, but even in BW it still shines ...and I've heard many people cite it as a fave work.
