I was thrilled to pick up a couple of pages from 1980s and 1990s comics artist Luke McDonnell on eBay. While my favorite work of his was Suicide Squad (see another gallery for an example), I also thoroughly enjoyed his work on Iron Man and the waning days of JLDetroit in the original Justice League of America series. This page is from the latter, in which Zatanna and Gypsy face a confused, cosmically powered and therefore dangerous man named Adam.

This has all the things going for it that I love from vintage pages. Lettering right on the boards, editor's notes/corrections in blue pencil, that mid-1980s copyright stamp on the back.

I like how McDonnell plays around with perspective here, and he conveys Adam's confusion and agony incredibly well without going too over the top. The one distraction on the page is the checkerboard floor. While it helps with the perspective lines, it also draws the eye away from the characters. Still, this is a nice addition to my collection and a good example of McDonnell's abilities as a storyteller.
