Description

Boy's Ranch is considered by Simon & Kirby fans to be one of their artistic peaks. I am honored to be the caretaker of this action page from the very first story, "The Man Who Hated Boys". This page is nearly pure Kirby: pencils, most of the inks (I suspect that Joe Simon or someone else from the shop may have thrown a little extra hay on here and there), plotting no doubt and the scripting sounds like Jack to me as well ("Wabash moves with unbelievable speed..."). Boy's Ranch was a pre-code book, and at some point this page was altered for post-code reprinting, although as far as I know it never was reprinted in it's altered form. Western Tales 31 reprints a different Boy's Ranch story. As you can see in the additional image, the alterations made nonsense of the second half of the page. Thanks to Gordon G. Christman for the expert restoration, which restores the skill and daring of Wabash and the three-dimensional action staging of Jack Kirby.

Great page. I think there is so much energy and growth in the Simon and Kirby artwork that I have seen. This is a prime example and a great action page with fantastic panels. A real treasure.
