Description

So, I was parked in front of the television late one night, watching one of my all-time favorite films: RONIN, the 1998 thriller starring Robert De Niro, written (pseudonymously, as "Richard Weisz") by David Mamet, and directed by Hollywood veteran John Frankenheimer. And I thought to myself, "Hey, there's a superhero named Ronin, isn't there? Didn't Frankenheimer also direct THE BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ and THE ICEMAN COMETH? Those are superhero names, too..."

Thus was born one of the twistier Common Elements concepts I've ever devised. Knowing that it would take a special artist to pull this one off, I turned to the great Val Semeiks, whose stellar work on two previous CEs convinced me that the man can draw anything. Val seized upon the idea like Stellan Skarsgard snatching up a mysterious aluminum briefcase. You can judge the result for yourself. Bob Almond finished the piece with another typically stellar inking pass.

Only the mercurial mind of Michael Rankins could come up with a way to tie these three disparate heroes together. And leave to commissioned art superstar Val Semeiks to make it a reality. Yet another Rankins/Semeiks triumph!
