Description

This great page comes from the 2 issue arc where our heroes battle Dr Doom; that really saw Lee & Kirby shift up a gear to the magical story lines with beautiful art from Jack that would develop through FF#45 onwards over the next dozen or so issues featuring the Inhumans and Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Up to FF#39 the stories were in a 'safe' holding pattern, enjoyable, but not very adventurous. This changed with FF#39 & FF#40, but stalled again through FF#41 to FF#44.
I began collecting with FF#43 back in 1965, enjoying the comic, appreciating the art, but not gripped as I was with some of the other titles at that time, particularly JIM (Thor) & Spiderman & Tales of Suspense (a Marvel Fan Boy I hear you say! Guilty as charged!); but as soon as I was given copies of FF#39 & FF#40 as back issues, my enthusiasm ramped up big time. Add to this the Inhuman and Galactus arc and it was a 'done deal'.
I used to wonder what had been my impediment to issue #43 and I see it very clearly now as the scratchy and far too light inking of Vinnie Colletta. I am not joining the 'dump on Colletta bandwagon' as I think much of his inking on Kirby in Thor and particularly Tales of Asgard (where he didnt remove some of Jack's pencils) was just beautiful, it is just that he was not right for FF. Hence my choice to get an action team page from #39 with wonderful inking by Frank Giacoia, with plenty of quality 'rock black' on the Thing, which sealed it for me.
A final vote of thanks to Will Gabri-El who was both professional and courteous in working this purchase.

Outstanding page from one of the most riveting storylines in the FF, imho. Great pickup!

Great pick-up, and totally agree with you--the stories ramped up in a great way here, and Giacoia was an excellent precursor to Sinnott. Love his smooth style on Kirby!

This is five panels of terrific. I love Mr. Fantastic problem-solving, the difficulties of a Thing robot, the inking that brings us closer to three dimensions than Stone managed, and really the whole transitional feeling of this from those early days to the more established FF books.

Cheers Glen, you have eloquently summed up how pivotal and visually exciting this page is and how it lays the all the necessary visual and verbal planks for the 'magic' that will soon follow.

I must flip the counter up from 13 number, I feel Giacoia is underappreciated on FF but tough to compete with the legendary Sinnott run so why not have one from both?

Absolutely Mark. I think both Giacoia and Sinnott at their best on Kirby are outstanding, though I think Joltin Joe was probably more consistent at this high peak of excellence.
