Description

This piece illustrates the cover of the Ballantine book by Fletcher Pratt, 1953.
1953 was the year Powers first went to work painting covers for Ballantine, thus launching his legendary SF illustration career. This was the 5th piece he did at Ballantine.

The piece was originally a wrap-around cover that included a rocket and space station, but the painting was cropped by Powers and sold as the front cover only (the back cover elements were cut-up and used as collage elements in later paintings!)

Cool piece! Interesting to hear the fate of the rest of the original image --- this classic front-cover-only result looks great as is!
