Description
Alex Raymond original preliminary study for “Look’s All-Service Girl” for December 1, 1942. The original is listed on page 176 of Tom Roberts' excellent book ALEX RAYMOND: HIS LIFE AND ART with an image area of 12 ¾” x 21 5/8”. The finished painting as published is included as an "additional image".
On the margin of the drawing is a notation (also in pencil), with the name Ruth Reed - 4 1/2 hours @ $5/hour. Ruth Reed was the model for this Cheerleader. She had posed for Raymond on multiple occasions and during the creation of this piece she posed for 4 1/2 hours at a rate of $5/hour.
I have admired this piece of artwork since it was first reproduced as available for sale from Russ Cochran in his fabulous original art catalog, GRAPHIC GALLERY #10 in 1977. The vellum on which the drawing is based itself is 18 3/4” x 23 5/8”. On the directly opposite page of Russ' catalog is the seemingly matching preliminary entitled "The Catch." THAT original has been in my collection since July 1996.
