DescriptionIllustration from "The Pocket Chesterfield: A Certain Way to Honour, Wealth, Distinctions", by John Gordon Dorrance, 1920. The book presents a satirical look at one has to do (or not do) in order to become a gentleman in high society.This particular illustration is one of three by Hay in the book, and is titled, "Some people have a trick." This piece is from a chapter titled, "Rules for Conversation", of which rule #5 states, "Some people have a trick of holding he persons they are speaking to by the button, or the hand, in order to be heard out, conscious, I suppose, that their tale is tiresome." This is almost like a Seinfeld close-talker, long before Seinfeld! Obvious (at least to me) influence from well known British illustrators of the period. Lovely, early pen & ink work by Hay.
