Jean-Paul Valley wandered the streets of Gotham after he was defeated by Bruce Wayne and the mantle of the bat was taken from him. Jean-Paul lost all sense in his life and he ended up under a bridge with some homeless people. One of them called Legs tried to cheer him up by telling him the story of how he lost his legs at the Vietnam War. Jean-Paul wouldn't listen to it and started to remember how his life changed since he became Azrael and all the villains he stopped when he was Batman. He felt that without his costumed identities he was a worthless human being and started to leave the place, hopeless.

Three guys appeared and started to disturb the homeless. One of the three was about to break a bottle on a homeless when Jean-Paul appeared and saved the people. He felt tired and weak, but deep down, he knew there was still a little hope for him.
