Description"When an obscure, sudden illness takes hold of and tortures the nightmare investigator Dylan Dog, it seems that no one can save him. His only way out may be to face the creature that's killing him, reaching it at the heart of suffering, a place on the very verge of death"This is a page from Dylan Dog #280, "Mater Morbi", written by Roberto Recchioni and illustrated by Massimo Carnevale, one of the most controversial stories ever published in the SBE comic books, due to a story that focuses on "real" horrors and deals with difficult themes such as pain, illness, and euthanasia. Mater Morbi's character embodies illness itself, and as she states: "People are afraid of me much more than Death". I love both Dylan Dog and Massimo Carnevale's art (please check my galleries for more pieces illustrated by Massimo), so I was looking for a good page from the only issue of the regular series he illustrated... and I found this page simply outstanding, featuring Dylan and Mater Morbi as well as Vincent and the Torments. The artist, to illustrate this allegorical story, chose an almost pictorial pen & ink style rich in black and white contrasts that sometimes is sketchy, to highlight the delusional status of Dylan at that moment. First published in Italy on Dylan Dog #280, then on a big volume by Bao and also available in other languages (including an English version by Epicenter Comics). Huge thanks to Francesco!!! Bella mezza splash, a primo impatto mi ricorda un po' la cover del n.23 L'isola misteriosa.

Absolutely stunning page! The rich, lush blacks and scratchy, edgy linework give the page a kind of gothic feel. And the gathering of misformed, twisted and contorted characters in the final panel remind me of the old silent movie, "Freaks."
