Description

One of the highlights of my visit out to Frank Quitely's studio early this year was hearing a few untold stories about working with Alan Grant. Theres a fully penciled Alan Grant / Frank Quitely Lobo story shelved for life at DC that has been rumored about for years... Quitely filled me and Chris Burnham in on all the details of that story over a few beers (he didn't have the pages with him at his studio). Not enough space to give a full breakdown here... but it was called LOBO The Hand To Hand Job...and I doubt it'll ever get published in todays PC environment. If you ever corner Vin at a bar ask him about it!

Anyway...this lead to Quitely talking about editorial issues with DC when working with Alan Grant on The Scottish Connection. Alan originally loved the story he'd turned in...but wrote it with Bruce Wayne never getting into costume...a straight detective story, editorial forced them to add Batman proper in his suit and it upset the creative flow the team had going. Nevertheless, Quitely actually went to the church featured in the issue and did heavy environment research with script in hand...you'll notice all that accurate detail in the final line art of the story.

As far as the art in the issue goes its some of Vin's best. I'd argue this particular era of Quietly's work ...when he was both pencil inking and lettering his stuff will go down as his technically strongest from an illustration standpoint. Flex Mentallo and Scottish Connection are truly incredible...he was young hungry and ultra talented... in that "I'll show you what a badass I am." stage of his career. Vin has said that before he drew Scottish Connection every time he said he drew comics it didn't register with people...but saying .."I draw Batman." validated him more with friends/family.

I'm very proud to own this Batman cover and can never thank Vin enough for the incredible visit.

Note- Batman The Scottish Connection is reprinted in its entirety in Graphic Ink: The DC Comics Art of Frank Quitely, I'd recommend picking that up if you haven't yet.

Amazing cover, I love in this book how he considered the weight of his cape and how it would move and it's consistent throughout. The detail I see on this, it's so amazing, much better than the printed version. The inside of the kilt especially. A beautiful piece, thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Felix! Not just for the kind words...but for helping me build my collection and fill major holes in my want list these last few years. I'll look back on this time of my life and be like "remember when I spent X in two years on comic art!". Getting involved in the OA community has been a lot of fun...so many great people in it....eye opening, rewarding, and a few lessons learned along the way (none you didn't warn me about).
