A great page from the ‘Three Septembers and a January’ story from the series of stories that comprise the ‘Fables & Reflections’ arc of The Sandman.

‘Three Septembers and a January’ tells the story of Abraham Norton, the first and last Emperor of America. It’s a story of how our dreams can keep us from despair.

The majority of the stories in ‘Fables & Reflections’ do not directly contribute to the overall Sandman story arc. Rather, they each speak to the title’s overall themes and provide further flesh and color to the characters. This page is a little different as it references the end game that will result in the destruction of Dream – as initiated by his sister, Desire. She does indeed, ‘bring the Kindly Ones down on his blasted head’.

I loved the short stories Gaiman wrote as much or more than the long arcs and it is always interesting to look at how these moments, big, small (or seemingly small) all tied together to form the whole. Also, it should be noted that McManus' art on this particular issue was inspired.
