DescriptionThis is the Japanese poster featuring Scarlett Johansson as the existential cyborg, Motoko Kusanagi. I have read about the controversy surrounding Johansson's casting, but don't expect the Japanese to care too much about the white-washing minefield. Even Mamoru Oshii, director of the excellent original anime, reportedly thought Johansson was perfect casting. The debate is Western-centric, Asian actors vying for movie roles who feel overlooked by Hollywood's casting choices, a point of view to which I am sympathetic. Regardless, the movie is currently playing in Japanese theaters, but I have not heard a lot of glowing reviews, so I will probably wait until it becomes available for rent to see how it measures up to the manga and anime.Social/Sharing |
