DescriptionSimply an amazingly detailed cover by Arthur "Art" Adams, it must have taken days to draw all those bricks! As shown on the published cover, editors had to make additional space on the top and extend the art to make room for the title, because Adams' art takes up the entire cover! The oversized imagery is particularly striking here and gives the piece a feel of Golden Age comics, pulps and political cartoons where heroes and villains were often depicted as larger than life. The cover shows the Spectre: one of the few entities that might be able to kick Galactus' butt, if they were ever able to meet ;-) Furthermore, I'm a great fan of dynamic covers that tell a story in just one image - like this cover, where the viewer may have an idea of what went before and what will happen in a few moments... The piece is original cover artwork on 11" x 17" bristol board. It's signed and dated by Adams in the lower right corner. Alex Sinclair provided colors for the published cover. Info about the Spectre: "The Spectre is a fictional character, a superhero who has appeared in numerous comic books published by DC Comics. The character first appeared in a next-issue ad in More Fun Comics #51 (Jan. 1940) and received his first story the following month, #52 (February 1940). He was created by Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily [...] The Spectre has all the abilities of a god, including, but not limited to, manipulation of time and space, control over all matter, invulnerability, and limitless strength. Virtually anything he wishes to do to those he judges is possible." Adams has also illustrated books featuring characters for which he has a personal love, such as Godzilla, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Gumby, the latter of which garnered him a 1988 Eisner Award for Best Single Issue [...] He is one of the most popular and widely imitated artists in the comics industry, whose drawing style has been credited as an influence upon artists" Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Adams_(comics) Social/Sharing |
