ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #593 PAGE 20 by Mike Wieringo

A very nice Superman page by the late and missed Mike Wieringo.

Superman disposes of Chemo and goes back to earth to confront Manchester Black.

Manchester Black and his team were basically DC Universe’s homage or rip off (whichever suits you best) of the Authority. He is obviously a Jack Hawksmoor prototype.

I really liked the interaction between the two concepts of Justice, the traditional Boy Scout hero on the one side and the ultra-violent 90s/00s dark heroes on the other side. It was well played and Sup’s dislike of the other side pours of the page here while he remains civil about it. And Mike did a great job at conveying Black smartassness as well.

Mike was an excellent storyteller, his clean animated style was enhanced by the clarity of his storytelling. You could immediately understand what was happening on the page without even reading the words.

I really liked what was happening in the Superman titles in the late 90s/early 2000s with great writing by the likes of Joe Casey and Kelly and great art also. They were really pushing Superman in different directions.
