Dave Johnson - Pweaze Wuv Mek

There is a story behind this one...suffice to say I didn't ask for a Kirbyesque monster pleading for forgiveness with a cute word balloon above his head. Somehow or other Dave got a bit confused and didn't realize I had left reference with him for what the actual commission was supposed to be - a Kirby Space Beast. By the time I stopped by the table to check on it's progression at NYCC last week it was almost finished. As a way to sort of bring in my original request, that little dude you see poking out from behind the monster is a Kirby Space Beast.

I was pretty disappointed to say the least, as Dave did even draw the piece on the toned paper I brought along and added the white hilights with the white Prismacolor pencil I gave him to work with.

Jason of Essential Sequential is a stand-up guy and offered to refund my money (before seeing if Dave might have a chance to redo it, but he was booked with other commmissions). In the end I decided to just keep the drawing, because it is a nice sketch..the monster is cool, but, yeah not what I originally envisioned.

Sometimes con sketches can be a crapshoot, so I just chalked this one up. Dave has done a bunch of commissions for me over the last few years, so hopefully next time we're on the same page and things turn out smoothly.
