Description
IN 1924, WHEN GOLDWYN MERGED WITH METRO AND LOUIS B. MAYER, THE LION LOGO BECAME THE TRADEMARK FOR THE NEW COMPANY. YEARS LATER THIS BEAUTIFUL AIRBRUSH, INK AND PAINT ART WAS DISCOVERED WITH ONLY ANIMATION ART ALL PREDATING 1939. IT WAS RENDERD ON A TWO HOLE PUNCH BOARD. MY SELECTION OF THE MODEL USED FOR THE LOGO WAS TANNER (1934-1956). - Addendum: Thanks to David Lesjak and David Gerstein I discovered that this original ink and paint art was used as the opening card in two 1934 Willie Whopper cartoons produced by Ub Iwerks. It appears in "Davy Jones' Locker" and "Hell's Fire". Davy Jones' locker was actually made in color in competition with the Disney Studio. Other Whopper cartoons used the same art with the lion roaring. The lion was also used in Captain and the Kids cartoons produced by MGM I938-1939.
