Description
For my money, Sean G. Murphy’s White Knight miniseries is the best Batman yarn since the 1980s. Every page in BWK is a masterpiece, but I’ve been looking for the one that best captures the story in one iconic image, and for me this is it.

Murphy used some variation of this theme of Batman in chains as Joker/Napier looms in the foreground in at least three places: Issue 1 p. 3 (which is awesome), the cover to Issue 7 (which is gorgeous), and this splash. Each has its own feel: defiant & dangerous Batman vs. smug Napier on p. 3, maniacal Joker & fuming Batman on the cover, whereas here it’s a more pensive vibe. BM’s been cooling his heels in Arkham for a while in anticipation of having to team up with Joker to save the city. This is the most blatant example of Napier casting Joker’s shadow; there are many subtle Joker reflections and shadows leading up to this point in the story, but soon Joker will be resurfacing for real. Needless to say, this is a crucial turning point in this kick-ass story.

I just love the mood Murphy achieved in this drawing. Batman’s pose, Joker’s dominating shadow cast by Napier, all the little details, and the overall composition from the hard angular shadows are just terrific. Murphy’s great with nuance and texture and he really knows how to spot his blacks. I’ve attached a couple process images Murphy teased his Twitter followers with while drawing this page.

So I found myself getting sucked into this image as the date approached for the release of art from Issue 7 and grabbed it when I had the chance.

Thanks for taking a look!

An amazing page, arguably one of the most representative images of the whole series! Somehow the intricate linework on chains and wall reminds me of master Toppi's style...

That's iconic, alright.  And fits the "dark" in dark knight monikker.

Neat piece! I was waiting until the series was done before giving it a shot, but maybe I’ll dig in sooner.

There are so many memorable pages from BWK. And out of those memorable pages, there are 10 that are simply perfect. This is one of those. A splash page that just make you go wow. HUGE congrats on this stunner. It's incredible.

The Joker's dark silhouette is in sharp contrast to the bright light capturing a defeated and restrained Batman. Masterful. Congrats.

I remember Batman visiting the Joker in Arkham at the beginning of the Killing Joke. And this feels like the Joker returning the courtesy. Awe-inspiring piece from the young master.

Extraordinary example of how a shadow can dominate all the scene. Joker, all that predominant black mass and Batman humiliate pose make this page so suggestive.
