Description

For years, I wanted to snag a McKone con sketch; his lines were often too long for me to wait it out, and on the one occasion I approached him, he was swamped with requests. By complete happenstance, I ran into him and Mike "Off-White" in a local pizzeria. On that occasion, I informed him I was reading an issue of Batman and was a big fan of his stuff. He did a quick sketch of Batman on a paper plate, and I did a doodle of Robin in response, which greatly amused him.

Several years later, I intended to execute a "jam" of Robin in three stages: a Jos� Luis Garc�a-L�pez Dick Grayson, an Ivan Reis Jason Todd, and a McKone Tim Drake. Garc�a-L�pez wasn't taking any more commissions for the day, and I couldn't afford Reis's (gorgeous) work. I did, however, purchase the McKone piece, which was way more crisp and detailed than what I paid for. I recall showing McKone a drawing I did modeled on the cover of Rubber Soul, featuring the Robins; as a brit, he was quite chuffed, and I recall "Off-White" complimenting how I conducted myself In approaching the commission of the piece. To date, this is the last artwork I have requested at a con; though I managed to request the piece in a courteous manner, I find it harder to approach these artists as A) I'm no longer the wide-eyed nine year old I once was and B) I'm now a prospective artist myself who is 1. on a student budget and 2. only willing to commission artwork I cannot execute a reasonable semblance of myself. Still, I was and am thoroughly pleased to have added this to my collection.
