Description

DOCTOR WHO (the Tom Baker version) made his American comic book debut in Marvel Premiere #57-60. The #57 cover was drawn by Walt Simonson (which he probably still owns as he has kept all his art), the #58 cover is by Miller/Austin, the #60 cover was painted by Earl Norem and this cover, #59, is by the late great Gene Day, published by Marvel Comics in April, 1981.

These 4 issues of Marvel Premiere marked the first American publication of a comic related to the British TV series DOCTOR WHO since the 1966 release Movie Classic (Dell, 1961 series) #190 adapted the 1965 film "Dr. Who and the Daleks." This is the first American comic book appearance of the TV version of the character The Doctor, although these issues and all future Marvel US releases, would consist of reprints from the the Marvel UK publication Doctor Who Weekly (later Doctor Who Magazine). The covers and most of the interior art features the Fourth Doctor as played by Tom Baker in the TV series.

What a roster of talents on those Dr Who covers! It looks like there were a lot of fans among the artists lining up to get their share! Glad that Gene Day was among the lot, his cover is a real blast!
