Description

Western goodness from Jack Kirby (with Stan adding the words). I'll let you guys weigh in on who did the inks...I have heard from many that George Roussos did them but Mark Evanier told me personally that Jack did the inks here. This is the splash page from a 4 page story (I will also be putting up page 2 as well because it features such great Kirby Western action).
Also if Brass Buttons didn't want to be a gunfighter anymore with every owl-hoot gunning for him...why doesn't he just change his shirt?

These pages are SO COOL! It's interesting to see Jack take on Western work again after the explosion of superhero stuff. You can see how incredibly different his stories look even after just a year or two away from the genre -- the camera has pulled in and the figures have gotten more dynamic. I have no opinion on the inks - I would have guessed Roussos too, but Evanier's call sounds pretty good.  There's just so little 1964 Kirby inking to compare it to. Wow, thanks for posting these.

Always good to hear from you Glen. When I first picked this 4 page story up (probably over a dozen years ago by now), I showed it to Scott Shaw and Mark Evanier (who were standing nearby). Scott thought that it looked like Roussos but stated that it was the best inks that Roussos had ever performed over Jack) but Mark was adamant that it was Jack inking Jack (and then repeated that sentiment in a recent article though I can't remember exactly where {Jack Kirby Collector?}) As always I appreciate your imput.

Awesome pages David! I love both of them - very unique! I also think those are Kirby’s inks - the inks match Jacks pencils almost perfectly. Congrats!

Thanks Ricky Bobby...I too believe them to be Jack's inks but I am no expert on those things. I will be posting the other two pages soon mostly because page 4 has Stan performing editing decisions via panel 'swapping' which is very interesting.

Best - David
