Description

This cartoon is now first time published, after 6.9.1987 when it was in Helsingin Sanomat. The artwork has been in my collection since 1987.

The text in the cartoon is roughly as follows:

"There are more cars than pedestrians on Eerikinkatu, so it must be transformed as a pedestrian zone. There is a movie theater for silly folks from the cultural sector, and the street is needed for pondering problems. Following the same logic, Mannerheimintie should be cut off for use by the Parliamentary Education and Culture Committee.

There is a National Theater and an Ateneum along Helsinki Railway Square, so instead of using it for traffic, it is the right place for art discussion.

And cars should be removed from Kalevankatu between Mannerheimintie and Yrjönkatu so that the crowds from the cultural sector crawling out of the restaurant "Kosmos" is not hit."

Let´s review now how Kari's forecasted "progress" in Helsinki city planning has been realised.

In the most street in the city center, the speed limit has been reduced from 50km/h to the existing 30km/h, so it is on its "good" way to close the streets from car traffic.
And that Kalevankatu has been closed already! Just like Kari visualised. Now it is only for pedestrians, restaurant Kosmos is still there ;-)
