DescriptionMike's awesome variant cover was sadly out of my league, so I was absolutely delighted when he told me this pencil prelim was available. Thanks Mike! A great addition to my Dawn of X collection!Solicitation - "THE BEST IS BACK! Wolverine been through a lot. He’s been a loner. He’s been a killer. He’s been a hero. He’s been an Avenger. He’s been to hell and back. Now, as the nation of Krakoa brings together all Mutantkind, he can finally be…happy? With his family all together and safe, Wolverine has everything he ever wanted…and everything to lose. Writer Benjamin Percy (X-FORCE, WOLVERINE: THE LONG NIGHT) and legendary artist Adam Kubert (X-MEN, AVENGERS) bring the best there is to his new home! And when Omega Red seeks amnesty on Krakoa, Wolverine investigates his bitter foe’s motives—and what he discovers is pure horror!" Mike's cover is of course based on the final panel of Herb Trimpe and Jack Abel's The Incredible Hulk #180 page 32, the first ever appearance of Wolverine - see Additional Images. In 2014, on the 40th Anniversary of Wolverine's first appearance, page 32 was auctioned by Heritage Auctions and sold for $657,250 (!) and picked up by another CAF member! Below I have copied HA's description of Lot #92191 - "Offered here is one of the most significant pieces of original comic art to ever appear on the market -- the final page from The Incredible Hulk #180 by Herb Trimpe, spotlighting the first-ever appearance of Wolverine, indisputably one of Marvel's most popular and enduring characters, who has gone on to star in countless comic books and graphic novels, not to mention movies, video games, and cartoons. 2014 marks the 40th anniversary of the character's first appearance in the landmark story, "And the Wind Howls Wendigo," scripted by Len Wein. In this issue, the Green-skinned Goliath headed to Canada, looking for some peace and quiet, when he was mysteriously drawn to a cave inhabited by the sister of the man who became the Wendigo. At the very close of the thriller, the Canadian government sends in its own special agent to take care of a Hulk sighting -- a ferocious mutant known as Wolverine. Not only does this Marvel milestone feature Wolverine's historic first appearance, but the debut image is incredible -- a large and dramatic full-figure view of Logan, in costume. Comic art lots just don't come any more exciting than this one -- for here is the original artwork for one of the most important first appearances of a major character ever to come to market, offered at No Reserve. We anticipate a tidal-wave sized surge of interest -- from not only all of the top comic art collectors -- but scores of other bidders swept away by this piece's unparalleled importance to both Marvel Comics and Pop Culture history. Iconic is a serious understatement! "In 1983, as a teenager, our consignor was given this artwork by Herb Trimpe -- and it has remained in his possession ever since. Since he has not been an active collector, it was never known with certainty if this page even existed -- until now. Inspired by Trimpe's generosity over thirty years ago, we're very pleased to note that the majority of the after-tax proceeds from the sale of the artwork is being donated by our anonymous consignor -- including a large portion to the Hero Initiative. The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays' creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. As Marvel Editor-In-Chief at the time, Roy Thomas came up with the original idea for the character and tells us "Because Wolverine was introduced in the final panel of the final page of Hulk #180, that has become one of the holy grail pages from any 1970s comic book. I'm overjoyed to know that it still exists -- and even happier that its sale will in part benefit the comics industry's own charity, Hero Initiative, on whose disbursement board I've sat since its founding. Wolverine was never a do-gooder... but this time he's going to do some good in spite of himself. Take that, Logan!" And artist Herb Trimpe agrees: "I am sure the fruits of this sale will be greatly appreciated by all concerned." For more information on the Hero Initiative and how to support the organization visit www.heroinitiative.org. The ink, graphite, and blue pencil on Bristol board image area of this mind-boggling Pop Culture Marvel masterwork is 10" x 15", and aside from some light overall paper aging, it's in Excellent condition. Inscribed and signed by Herb Trimpe at the lower left." By the way, I like that Mike included Tom Muller's new "Wolverine" logo. I loved Tom's design role in HOXPOX and the Dawn of X publications. Just a great homage and SO finished for a prelim! Some nice textural work he did there via pencil, and I agree, very cool to have the new logo highlighting the new start/era for Wolverine and the X-Men overall! Congrats!
