Description
Lady and Tiger

Gouache & Ink

19" x 24"

I fell in love with this painting when it was recently offered by Heritage. It had a bit of a Jungle Book vibe to it ... but Mowgli is a young woman and Shere Khan is not trying to kill her.

I was unfamiliar with the artist, Dan Smith (1865 - 1934), but the website Lambiek Comiclopedia provided a nice overview. Smith was primarily a magazine illustrator, initially working for Leslie's Illustrated Weekly and famous for documenting the Old Wild West culture, from cowboys to the native Americans as they transitioned from living on the plains to reservations. He was also famous for his wildlife paintings. Later, Smith worked over 20 years for the Hearst Corporation; he covered the Spanish-American war, created covers for the Sunday World magazine, and also had a comic strip The Jungle Folk. Towards the end of his career Smith did Bible Comics, which - for the time period - were remarkably realistic & frank in story telling & artistic style.

I'm glad I decided not to bid on her; she's in a good home - congratulations!

Thanks for the congrats, and thanks too for not bidding ... I definitely had plenty of competition already. I do loan out pieces from the collection for museum shows, so hopefully you will get to see her in person some day ... :)

What a beauty!  I was the under-bidder, and am a big Dan Smith fan (check out my gallery).  I'm glad it went to a good home!!

Thanks for the compliment Ben, and interesting to find out you were the under-bidder in the auction. I've been the runner-up in several auctions as well so know the feeling; but if I ever decide to part with the painting you will be the first person I contact. You have a great collection (I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite you have so many wonderful pieces) so I know Lady and Tiger would be going to another good home ... ;)

Thanks, Ingrid!  If you ever want to consider a trade (this or any of your great Frazetta pieces!), let me know!

Thanks for the Congrats Brian ... much appreciated. As nice as the image appeared on the Heritage site I was even more delighted with the piece when it arrived and I saw it in person. It's a beautiful commanding painting, with unbelievably vivid colors for a piece that is close to a 100 years in age.

I do not know how the work was utilized ... I am assuming as a magazine cover, but it may have been a personal piece. If I find out more about the painting I will let you know.
