This rocks, M.  Really must be a sight in person.  Such a cool and UNIQUE way for DWJ to have homaged this famous movie moment.  The fact that Luke and Vader are as small as they are is a plus in the scheme of this image, speaking to the grandness and gravity of the scene,  literally and figuratively.  Congrats!

Fantastic piece.  I hate to repeat myself but epic is the first word that comes to mind with most of DWJ commissions I see.  The scale of this illustration is dizzying. 

This is totally a keeper. One if ny my Favotire commission DWJ has ever done. Even if the figures are small he nailed it. Congrats!

You know, the true beauty of a commission is that it's like improv comedy or jazz - you don't really know what you're going to get, and it's just an artist "riffing" on a subject, trying to make magic on demand.  The commissions I like the most are the ones where you see more of the artist's mind, or perspective, or technique - how they subvert an expectation or blow the roof off the place and give you the gift of being shown something you had never considered, thought of, or expected.  You're getting more of THE ARTIST in the commission than the subject of the commission, really.  Not just "a simple head shot" (no slight against head shots intended).

This piece belongs in a pretty elite category of commission; it has scope, power, depth, and BALLS - who would think of giving a paying customer the subjects they asked for, but all but imperceptible, as almost background noise, among a panoramic shot?  The subject of this commission is not Luke or Vader (or even the incredible lighting or zipatone technique), it is the exploration of the emotion in a moment we've all seen a hundred times... but THIS time presented through new eyes.  It takes our expectations and shows us we just weren't trying hard enough.  It is a gorgeous rendering of a culturally beloved story moment, from a vantage point most of us would never consider observing from.   I hear the wind howl past me as I look at this.

Jeez, I could go on and on - sorry.  Long day at work. :)  Incredible piece - most sincere congrats!

Thanks for taking the time to write your comment. I agree with pretty much everything you say. Daniel is ballsy to be sure, but I think it's more that he's fearless. He knows the value of making good, honest, NEW art. It's definitely not cheap, but it's a show stopper every time.

"Fearless" is exactly the word I was looking for (I seemed to have used up about ALL the others... :) ).  Excellent call - spot on.  Beautiful piece - many, MANY congrats! 

This is a great example of how the magic just comes together so perfectly at times when you leave things in the artist's hands.  Interestingly, if DWJ had pitched the idea he had in mind (small figures battling, viewed from below), I can imagine it might have been an an easy pass, but the final piece is amazing.

Loved this the second I first saw it, and I thought I'd already left a comment, but I must have been distracted by the art.  DWJ's environments are so good and even reduced to a speck, the saber fight still dominates
