DescriptionNope, not Stormbringer of Elric fame, but Stormbringer the non-player character originally from the Villains & Vigilantes role-playing game! I first remember seeing Jeff Dee's work in some AD&D manuals/modules for TSR back in the early 1980s, and I just loved his stuff. Something very dynamic and slick about it. He then went on to create the V&V RPG and worked with guys like Bill Willingham - I loved the game system and the artwork that was included. Never got to play it much, but I've always thought it was an outstanding system. Flash forward to the present - I was making preparations to attend AggieCon and was checking out the guest list where I spotted Dee's name. I was tempted to get him to draw one of my old AD&D characters, but then I remembered there was this one character that showed up in a single spot illustration in one of the original V&V books that I just loved the look of - a man dressed in black from head-to-toe with an upside-down sword emblazoned on his uniform, wearing a big ol' cape and pirate boots and carrying a big sword. No name listed, no powers listed, but he always stuck in my mind as someone potentially cool. I took a copy of the spot illo with me and asked Jeff about him - he actually remembered everything about the character! He gave me all the backstory on Stormbringer as he whipped up this excellent sketch for me. I'm planning to ink a blueline of this one - I had mentioned that while he was drawing so he left the underside of the cape for me to fill in with ink. This was a toughie to scan as he seemed to have the messiest pencil in the world, just tons and tons of graphite all over the place; lots of erasing in Photoshop to clean it up :( Pencils on 9" x 12" Bristol.Social/Sharing |
