DescriptionSince Blondie and Dagwood were having no luck in obtaining consent for their marriage from Dagwood's rich parents, Blondie suggested that Dagwood go on a hunger strike until the parents relented. This is the first strip of that sequence, which consisted of 24 daily strips (Mondays through Saturdays) from January 3 through January 28, 1933.In late 1932, Dagwood had been ill and was often shown in bed. Strips from that sequence are often erroneously claimed to be part of the hunger strike sequence, as are some of the post-hunger strike strips showing Dagwood's recovery from the protest. None of these other strips are part of the actual hunger strike continuity, nor are the 4 Sunday strips which appeared during the weeks of the actual fast. One source states that the hunger strike began on January 2, 1933, when Blondie made the suggestion on the day before Dagwood began to follow her advice. As can be seen in this strip, both the suggestion and the actual commencement of the hunger strike began on January 3, 1933, a Monday -- no part of the sequence appears in the January 2nd Blondie strip (a Sunday page), nor could it, since the Sunday pages had separate continuities from the dailies at this point in time. Collecting Blondie, cont. It turned out that Muller had bought the first hunger strike from Don Phelps before Phelps had gone to San Diego, where he introduced me to the other Raymond which he had not yet sold. In any event, I was hooked on Blondies and began to keep an eye out for more. Although I bought a couple more, from 1932, from Muller over the years (he seemed to be a major source and would have a few on most of his monthly sales lists), but few by Raymond turned up during the remainder of the 1980s. I did buy the Christmas strip from 1931 from Phelps when he decided to part with it -- he was a big collector of Christmas themed originals. Continued... Social/Sharing |
