Stargirl

This is admittedly my first sojourn into the world of Stargirl. Aside from "Justice League Unlimited," "Smallville," and the new series - the latter I haven't seen yet - I knew very little about Courtney Whitmore. However, a commission is a commission, so thankfully I found Alex Ross's cover work for JSA depicting Courtney with the rest of the team. It gave me the concept idea for a simple conveyance of Courtney's innocence and exuberance that didn't require an action sequence. Further, I knew her stepdad's exo armor had to be in the shot, so it made a perfect background choice. It was one of the first times I'd used a mech figure in a commission. On 11 x 14" Canson with mixed media, Courtney is simply posing with her staff in the air and a wide smile on her face. The challenge also lie in establishing the luminescence of the staff's head and how it interacted with both figures and the simple floor. Thankfully, liquid gel lines and guess work provided the shine I needed, as did the different blue tones for Stargirl's costume. I also tried to retain the chrome finish of STRIPE behind her through a combination of micron black lines and warm grey pencil crayons and copic markers. A good experiment and a worthwhile result for the entire project.
