DescriptionHow do you collect an artist that doesn’t sell their published work? After consulting with a group of monks clapping with one hand, we came up with an answer: a tree falling in the forest DOES make a sound! Yeah, they weren’t super helpful...but I did come across Greg Hildebrandt and SpiderwebArt on CAF, and saw a lovely batch of Walt Simonson prelim work for Thor Ragnarok! I love the busts Simonson does, but I wanted some published work of his, with some finished lines, depth, and maybe hinting at action. Like everyone else, I wanted something reminiscent of his Thor run and style.Meet Javokk. He’s not The troll, just A troll, as Walt Simonson wrote on the character prelim sheet. His arc is short, basically consisting of a fun battle in issue #4. He’s the protector of a small town at the edge of the world, and had been for some time. He pretends to be a savage troll, but he’s really a softy who stayed to protect these defenseless town folk. Javokk, the troll with a heart. This prelim spoke to me because it had all the elements I was looking for, and a cool character from the story, too. I wouldn’t have minded seeing more of Javokk, he was well-developed and fun. I included a couple pictures of Kurse, too, so you can see what I “see.” I thought of him when I saw the design. And, for the record, I completely understand and respect Mr Simonson’s thinking on not selling his art. I’m really happy to get an example of one of the artists that drew me to comics as a youth. Thank you, Greg and Jean. Social/Sharing |

It's a cool prelim. What I love about artists like Simonson who have such distinctive styles, is that you can immediately tell it's their art even when looking at a rough prelim like this because their style still shows through!

Exactly. I kind of steer away from prelims except for something really hard to find, like my Hughes cover prelim or the Wrightson Swamp Thing. My wife usually tells me "no, just wait for the page, Jason." :) Thanks, Rubén.

So fun to see the artistic process of such an accomplished artist! Thank you for the additional pics so we can see the finished product.
The way you emphasized that he is "a troll" and not "The troll" made me think of the movie "Groundhog's Day." Where Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell are sitting in the restaurant and he says to her "I'm a god. I'm not *the* God ... I don't think." Hahaha! Classic. Need to watch that one again.

Ha, that's a great scene! Good call on the similarity, and I love that movie. And, yeah, I dig seeing the process, too. It's neat seeing him decide the final lines in the design. Thanks, Paul!

Prelims are great! They show you how the artist approaches a scene or a character. And this one, by Walt Simonson, is splendid!

This might be the best preliminary from Walter that I have ever seen. It shows all the hallmarks of Simonson's work -- dynamic posing and extraordinary linework. Congratulations!

Walt Simonson, I think we can all agree, is not a creator who phones in his work. While I wouldn’t consider myself a “definitive” authority, I am very familiar with a healthy chunk of his work, and even taking into account his usual high standard of excellence, it is readily apparent to me how invested he is in ‘Ragnarok’. The story is compelling, the storytelling is excellent, and the art and design work... oh, man - the art and design! Rich with all the detail and character he infused his (*ahem*) “other” Norse-themed work with, Ragnarok feels (to me) overflowing with a passion and exuberance; a real pride in the work which only happens when a great creator gets to build something from the ground up that they (and they alone) control and own.
Your Javokk is a great example. I would argue that while he is not “The” troll, he is certainly more than “A” troll - I, too, really enjoyed his character and hope we see more of him! - and having that great prelim of the character - even on top of it being a beautiful Simonson piece and special in that regard - is a wonderful add to your awesome collection. I love the energy of this piece, and how it feels like Walter was in the throes of inspiration when he created it; not just a doodle, I don’t think - he was seriously pursuing (and capturing) something. Mega-congrats, J! Awesome!

Fantastic point! I was trying to put my finger on what was drawing me to this, and as you astutely pointed out: we are seeing his inspiration. Perfect description. Thank you, Jason!
