Description

Latest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #128, art by Luis Rivera, based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Fantastic Four #164, original art by Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott.

Title: "If A Man Be Made Of Stone...".

Story: Since his defeat in 1940 at the hands of Steel The Indestructible Man (see Steel #2), Doctor Moag has been confined to a padded cell, unable to touch the ground. But when a stone falls from the boot-tread of an unlucky orderly, the inmate grabs it, and his powers as the Mineral Master are restored! Tearing a hole in the asylum's stone walls, he levitates a mass of earth and rock, and uses it as a platform as he speeds towards Washington DC, to continue his battle against those he sees as war-mongers!

In the nation's capital, the Ray, Human Bomb and Miss America await the arrival of President Roosevelt to open a newly-completed section of the Pentagon building. They're joined by Plastic Man, who's come in search of Phantom Lady, but she's been temporarily sidelined following a beating at the hands of criminals. Before Plas can leave, however, the flying figure of the Mineral Master arrives, and starts to use his powers to tear apart the Pentagon!

The heroes engage him, and the Mineral Master - still raving about stopping the war-mongers - brings rocks to life (as he had done in his previous appearance) and sends them into battle. The Human Bomb's explosive punches, and Miss America's transmutational powers, prove effective against the animated rock-creatures, while the Ray airlifts some reporters out of the combat zone, and Plastic Man wraps up the villain --- only to be shaken off!

The heroes realise that they need to lead the Mineral Master away before FDR can arrive, and head for another, uncompleted, section of the Pentagon, where the battle continues. Finally Miss America uses her power directly against the Mineral Master, who is staggered - and brings down a ton of construction material on the heroes!

The Human Bomb is able to punch out a small space for the heroes to shelter in as the rubble encases them,, which is reinforced by Plastic Man's flexible body (and illuminated by the Ray) while Miss America recovers enough to transform enough of their prison for them to escape. On emerging, however, they discover that the clearly-weakened villain had fled the scene.

The Bomb, the Ray and Miss America are sure that he'll return, and stand ready to oppose him as and when he does so, but Plastic Man heads off to meet with Phantom Lady - on a matter of national security (which will play out in issue #133).

Another great commission from Luis, and it gave me the chance to bring back one of the goofiest villains from the short-lived Steel series. Hope you enjoy it!

I love your back stories as much as I love the commissions themselves. Talk about obscure villains
