I like the drama and angle of the first panel.

Originally, the fire was to have been caused by the sword striking the stairs, creating sparks -- no mention is made in the script about a torch or torches -- anywhere -- not even earlier in the great hall, or when Pellam first shows Balin the Lance. Anyway, since there also was also no mention of the characters fumbling around blindly, giving King Pellam a torch seemed a no-brainer and dropping a torch, a much more logical way for a fire to accidentally start.
