2020 was a stellar year from creator Gene Luen Yang. He covered the entire spectrum of comics with his vast array of work, “Dragon Hoops” which is a memoir chronicling his time as a teacher as he follows his school’s varsity basketball team. Personally, as someone who knows next to nothing about basketball Yang creates a story that both educate you about the game and its history by making you care about these kids and this team. The emotional scope and clarity of the story illustrates what a master storyteller Yang is. It’s an honest story that makes you feel joy as you read it and for that reason alone makes it unmissable in the year that is 2020.
On the other end of the storytelling spectrum is “Superman Smashes the Klan,” an adaptation of an arc of the 1946 Superman radio show in which Clark Kent must confront bigotry and racism. Yang creates a true classic tale that is timely and timeless. This is Superman at his very best. Gurihiru art is magnificent, their storytelling and clean lines flawlessly executed. Superman Smashes the Klan is everything you want in a Superman comic, ideal and honest, much like Superman himself. I also want to give an honorable mention to “The Terrifics” issue twenty-five which Gene Yuen Lang crafted a “choose your own adventure” issue that uses the comic medium in a positively brilliant manner.
Which brings us to “Shang-Chi” The Master of Kung Fu. Shang-Chi was a character that I never really connected with, by that I mean I never had an issue or run or story that made me appreciate or connect with. Then in 2021 we saw the first teaser for the film “Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings” and it got my attention. Then during the first episode of Comic Art Fans “Collector Conversations” I saw one of the panelist Khalil “K Gearon” Gearon spotlighted a page from Gene and artist Dike Ruan’s first miniseries, and it really blew my mind. The page was from the third issue and was the first time we see his new costume designed by Jim Cheung. I went and picked up the collection and really enjoyed the heck out of it. Gene Luen Yang and Dike Ruan both streamline and expand the mythos of Shang-Chi. After reading it I immediately went to Dike Ruan’srepresentative’s page, Kirby Comic Art. I poured over the pages trying to pick the right one and after many hours, (you can ask my friends it was genuinely hours) I picked the one I wanted. Issue five page 5. Dike Ruan’s storytelling is masterful here. Heis a rising star in comics. I love the dynamic action and how this page is a great showcase of Shang-Chi. Thanks to Gene and Dike for knocking this story out of the park and to K GEARON and the entire Collector Conversation panel for bringing this awesome book and art to my attention.

Congratulations on this Ruan - he's a special talent! So many techniques all on display at once, plus a nice shot of Shang Chi in the last panel.

Congrats, Matt! I think Dike's star will only shine brighter and brighter. His work has been stellar on Shang-Chi...case in point with your example here! You got actions, close ups, ink wash...yessir!
