Description
The horses start running in the Great International Derby in this original for November 27, 1931. From the very first panel, DeBeck lowers any expectation on the part of his readers that Pony Boy has much of a chance of winning the race. As soon as the gate opens, all the larger race horses leave the tiny horse with short legs in their dust. Even Sunshine tells his small steed to take it easy, since they have to go around the track twice, apparently a long distance for the smallest horse in the pack. In fact, this bit of information concerning the two lap race proves to be critical to this short story line. Next we see Sunshine eating one of a number of bananas to satisfy his extreme hunger, throwing the banana peels behind him as he tells Pony Boy not to bother getting ambitious in connection with the race.
