Description
Sal Buscema Hulk pages are always at the top of my want list so any time I can add a page of my favorite character drawn by my favorite artist, it is a (very) good art day. So much to enjoy in this page (at least for me). This was Sal’s first issue as the penciler in the regular Hulk series (Sal drew him in Defenders and other appearances previously) and I just love the work he did here - combined with gorgeous Joe Staton inks, these early pages have a great quality to them. This Hulk-filled page starts off with a classic Hulk smash THRAKK! image, followed by the great Hulk likes beans gag with Hulk downing a full plate, and wrapped up with a Hulk to Banner transformation. I feel as happy as Hulk after SSLOSHHing down a plate of beans! URP!

Always looking for more Hulk pages by Sal, please feel free to let me know if you have any or come across them in your collecting travels.

Forget Bruce transforming into the Hulk, how about this transformation page where an enraged Hulk suddenly goes all docile and dreamy-eyed all on account of some yummy beans.  Really love Sal Buscema Hulk, and how cool for you to own a page from the very first issue that Sal drew!  Congrats!

I'm with Paul! This is a beans page. So great, Dave.

A perfect example of why Staton was my favorite inker during Sal's glorious run on this book.  Every one of those first six panels is pure gold.  Congrats on getting a page from the issue that started it all.

There's a reason why that campfire was fueled for an entire night.

How about some more beans Mr. Taggart?

I'd say you've had enough.

This is almost the perfect Hulk page if that's possible. Am I crazy in thinking this could've doubled as a great Snickers ad midbook (appropriate substituions of course)? Congrats Dave, love this.

Thanks gammabro! I think it would work, 100% sure of it. I'd go buy a Snickers bar after reading it!

Dave, a stellar Hulk page by the great Sal Buscema. Sal’s Hulk was an incredible 10 year run for Sal and you can see by the effort he put into this stunning page, that his Hulk run would become an epic and historic labor of love.

Love to see the Hulk happy. Beans negate gamma rays!  Don't tell the Leader!

Congrats -- an awesome page from Sal's first issue!  Was this the first time Hulk tried beans or was that in an issue of Defenders?

Hulk shared some beans with Crackajack Jackson back in #182, and I think that was his introduction to the 'magical fruit'. But yes, his beans obsession spilled over into the Defenders, always to excellent effect.

Not the first time that Hulk ate beans, but an early beans appearance, like Paul  mentions. I might have to figure out the first Hulk eating beans appearance

Brilliant page, Dave! Hulk's expressions are fantastic, and it's wonderful to have a bit of Hulk-eats-beans history in your collection! The art is superb.

I absolutely love this page and remember it fondly (although I had no idea in which issue to find it until now).  It was released  only a few months after my buddy and I started collecting comics and he was the Marvel guy and I was the DC guy;  but we always shared and read each other's comics and traded them back and forth (aaah, simpler times).  As a couple of nine year-olds we found the whole "Hulk like beans" with the burping as he devoured them all in one gulp hysterical. And it became an ongoing joke we kept going back to; not unlike what we do now with 'Dueling Dealers.'  And I have to admit that decades later, mostly when having beans, it still pops back into my brain.  So its nice to see it in all its artistic glory once again ... and yes, I'll admit I still think its funny.

Now read Hulk's dialogue in Burkey's Hulk voice and don't telll me you aren't laughing!

That's a great story, I have several like this with a couple close friends that traded reading each other's comics and laughing at comic related things. Thanks for sharing, this brought back several fond memories.

Funny Hulk page. Sal Buscema was so talented and this page shows some of the range of his talent.

Little Known fake bean facts: Not only is it the only legume that's also a Musical Fruit, it can also suppress gamma rays and sedate wild beasts. Hulk SSLOSHH! Wow, Sal's first appearance in Hulk. I loved this early work by him and Staton. Their styles meshed really well. And how do you not love the beans scene? I very much remember it, too. Very cool find, Dave. Congrats!

Who would have thought the little bit of writing about Hulk loving beans would be appreciated so much/by so many. Len Wein is probably smiling up above right about now.

That first panel is super awesome, and the other panels with Hulk's face puts a smile on my face.  Very nice addition to your amazing collection!
