Description
The Sandman: A Gallery of Dreams #1 Pg. 25 Pin-Up
Pencil, Ink, and Watercolor (Mixed Media) by Colleen Doran on twice-up board (13x18) with an image area of 11"x 16.75"; matted and framed to 20" x 26.5" (in a custom piano black lacquer frame).
One of two final pick ups to share from Comic Art Live / CAF Con from May 2021. Shoutout to Dino Mauricio for working out a deal with me for this gorgeous framed piece! Very happy to have finally found a great representative published piece from the universe of Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Would love to also add an interior page from the actual storyline eventually.
With this piece we have a mind-blowing apocalyptic painting from "The Sandman: A Gallery of Dreams" (a one-shot with a cover date of October, 1994 which was a compilation of pin-up art by various artists drawing the Morpheus character and others) by Colleen Doran, one of the artist's on "Dream Country" and "A Game of You" arcs for Neil Gaiman's Sandman. She was the penciller on the 1st "solo" Death story "Facade" - Sandman issue #20.
Colleen is in tremendous company published in the one shot along with a stacked all-star lineup of artists doing full page size works including: Dave McKean, Matt Wagner, Barron Storey, George Pratt, Terry Moore, Brian Bolland, Shake Oakley, Paul Lee, Craig Hamilton, Eddie Campbell, Rick Berry, Michael Zuli, Geof Darrow, Simon Bisley, Jamie Hewlett, Mark Chiarello, Alex Ross, Bill Koeb, Mike Mignola, Malcom Jones III, Kelley Jones, Jon Muth, Jeff Smith, Tony Harris, Colleen Doran, Gahan Wilson, Alison Seiffer, Tom Taggart, Jill Schwarz, Greg Spalenka, Moebius, and Charles Vess.
This multi-layered composition of Sandman (Dream), Death, Lucifer and baby David along with key artifacts: the Key to Gates of Hell (from Season of Mists), the Morpheus Mask (Preludes and Nocturnes), and Death’s Ankh and White Swan (Fables and Reflections).
A feast for the eyes chock full of symbolic imagery and apocalyptic visions that perfectly capture the dark fantasy tone of the Sandman anthology.
Fun fact, the Sandman character Thessaly is actually based on Colleen Doran! I am a big fan of her style/work and she is an awesome person as well. I am part of her community over on Patreon, she creates fantastic content for her supporters on a regular basis.
Very glad to have this piece hanging in my home gallery! Thanks again, Dino!
