DescriptionNovember 2001.I was planning to post this tonight even before Ashley Wood was mentioned on this evening’s Comic Art Collector Conversation (#13 - 8/15/21). While Morrison and Quitely were getting most of the attention on New X-Men, Joe Casey was doing interesting work at the same time on the original X-Men title. Casey’s run didn’t have a consistent art team, but the artists we did get did stellar work. One such art team (if only for one issue) was Sean Phillips and Ashley Wood. The blending of Phillips and Wood here created a style that was a big break from what we had been seeing on the X-books in the immediately preceding years, and I wish they had done more together on the title. What a gorgeous collision of these two artists. Love the shape of Wolverine. Stocky and of course, feral. Congrats!

Ashley Wood's artwork is an experience more than just pictures to be admired. It is like a thrill ride of illustration and paint tendencies to engage the reader in thought and emotion. Even this scene with the team boarding the plane, we get images that flash with the scratchy lines to break up what we are used to seeing. It is to suggest movement and liveliness of characters in mid motion.

The next time they do a collection of Wood's work, you should be hired to write the captions!

He's had so many book collections already that the die is cast for the many volumes to come.

Cool page! Really interesting artist pairing; both are so strongly associated with books with solo art credits.
