DescriptionCaptain N: The Game Master - Kevin "Captain N" Keene. Animation Cel & Sketch (underneath, see additional photos for sketch only image) from episode number 5 (not confirmed)?Another animation related piece gifted to me by my friend "Bake" / Tommy Baker. This one is from Captain N: The Game Master, which was an American animated television series that aired on television from 1989 to 1991 as part of the Saturday morning cartoon lineup on NBC. The show was produced by DIC Animation City and incorporated elements from many of the most popular video games of the time from the Japanese gaming company Nintendo. There was also a comic book version by Valiant Comics. Depicted here in this cel is Kevin Keene AKA The Game Master, the lead/titular character of the series (portrayed by Dorian Barag in the live-action part of Episodes 1 and 2, voiced by Matt Hill in animated form) and also the mascot at the time for Nintendo Of America. Kevin is summoned to "Videoland" from the real world by the Ultimate Warp Zone as the fabled Game Master known as "Captain N", to serve as a warrior of the Videoland royal family, using his outside knowledge of their universe (which in his own world are various video games) to protect it from invasion. I never really watched this cartoon that I can remember when I was a kid even though I did play PLENTY of NES and regularly read/collected Nintendo Power Magazine at the time. However, after a "desperate" search...I was able to "locate" all 3 seasons of the show to watch (details intentionally kept vague, lol), so I will dive into them eventually at some point. Got 3 more cels from this show to post coming up next! :) Social/Sharing |

If they gave out letters for letterman jackets, I should have gotten one for Contra, Blades of Steel, NBA Jam, Super Mario Brothers 3, and Excuuuuse Me Princess!

All Classics! I go down retro gaming rabbit holes every once in awhile, lots of good memories. And I know Zelda 2 / The Adventure of Link gets a bad rep from some retro gamers and back in the day but I always liked it. Need to get on that Nintendo Switch Breath Of The Wild at some point. Zelda series always had the best music for me too.

I never heard of this, either as a cartoon or a video game. I DID spend a summer playing video games at my neighbour's house when I was 12 and broke the world record on Grand Prix for the Atari 2600, twice. I never got a letterman jacket though. The booklet that came with the cartridge explicitly said that if anyone broke the world record time printed within, they should take a photo of the screen and send it in to Atari. Neither my neighbour's camera nor my mom's camera had any film and we couldn't just keep the game turned on until one of our parents bought some, so I had to shut it off without ever having proof of having broken the record and going on to fame and fortune. I have since hated video games. Might there be a connection?

I don't think this was ever a videogame, just a tv series capitalizing on the popularity of some of the Nintendo (NES) games that were out at the time. That was the next phase after the Atari era which is a little bit prior to my "prime" when it came to videogames. I later eventually got a hand me down Atari from a friend's family who no longer wanted it but by that time I already had an NES and a Sega Genesis, I think. Harder for me to remember all the details, unlike you who who was scarred for life on video games by Grand Prix on Atari 2600 ;) ...but yeah, I can't remember watching the tv show, and if not for my friend gifting me all these cels from it I may never have retroactively discovered it
