By rights this should be part 4 or 5, but unfortunately I have a deadline to meet. Since it's Halloween month, it's the right month to get in the ghouls and goblins mentality to tackle one of the scariest characters from my childhood. I remember watching Disney's take on the Sleepy Hollow story entitled "The Adventures of Ichabod Crane and Mr. Toad." Only in my case it was just the Sleepy Hollow story, as Disney had a separate feature. Anyway, what stood out the most from that cartoon was that EPIC unveiling of The Headless Horseman with that haunting laugh, the horse rearing up with him holding a jack-o-lantern in one hand and a saber in the other. That being said, I had to capture that moment in my own way, and brought in the cemetery background from the Tim Burton film treatment. Since he also grew up with that Disney flick in his head, he captured the essence perfectly. Anyway, this is an 11 x 14" commission that I NEVER saw coming and am grateful it did. Here we have the Hessian soldier in a similar pose to that image from my memories, only I reversed the angle. For the horror aspect - as if there isn't enough horror already - I threw in a decapitated head in the foreground beside the tree. In a way with the inks alone this is almost a negative space study. I tried to get the Hessian's military uniform as exact as I could, as well as the horse's harness. I'm slowly approaching the color rendering stage and I'm hoping it's by week's end. More as it develops.
