DescriptionA piece I was thrilled to acquire. I had been a huge fan of Cleaver since first discovering his work many years back. He did many pages such as this. A central study in pencil, with surrounding ink vignettes further telling the story. For my money, he stands alongside any of the greats of the era. This piece was a little too large for my scanner. I'll try and include some details in other scans. His work amazes me.Social/Sharing |

Amazing mix of line illustration, soft photographic drawing, and regular outlined art for a patriotic piece. It might even be more detailed than what they could print.

Marcus, glad you enjoyed it. The details are pretty amazing. I don't think they even show up well in the scan.

Beautiful! NFS Ever - lol!
Dan, Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed the piece. I was surprised when I first discovered his artwork several years back. Why had I never heard of this artist before? He checked all the boxes for work that I usually enjoy. I feel there is a vast, untapped, resovoir of his work out there. He deserves much more acclain. He had a brother, Ralph, who also worked for the publications of the day.

Yes, it's spectacular. I only know of his work (and the whole genre of comics in illustrated papers of the period) from The Origins of Comics by Theirry Smoldern - there's a Reginald Cleaver reproduced in that book. I'm amazed that there are still originals around!

Dan, I discovered him several years back. I can't understand why he is not more widely recognized. After picking up several of his antique printed pages, I just about fell out of my chair when I ran across this original. I am beyond thrilled to be able to have it in my small collection. I would love to see a book focusing on his career.
